How to Choose the Right Lubricant Balance for PVC Foam Board Production

In PVC foam board production, lubricants play a small but very important role.
A wrong balance between internal and external lubricants may cause many production problems, such as yellowing, brittleness, uneven thickness, poor surface quality, and unstable foam structure.
Understanding the function of each lubricant can help engineers quickly identify problems and optimize the formulation.
1. Internal Lubricant vs. External Lubricant
Internal lubricants have good compatibility with PVC resin. They work inside the resin system, reducing the friction between PVC molecules and helping the material melt and plasticize more evenly.
Typical internal lubricants include stearic acid and metal stearates.
External lubricants have lower compatibility with PVC resin. They migrate to the surface of the melt and create a lubricating layer between the PVC melt and the processing equipment.
Typical external lubricants include paraffin wax and polyethylene wax (PE wax).
A good PVC foam board formulation requires a proper balance between internal and external lubrication.
2. Common Problems Caused by Lubricant Imbalance
① Insufficient internal lubricant
Possible symptoms:
Poor plasticization and uneven melt distribution

The main reason is that PVC particles have higher internal friction, making the melting process incomplete and unstable.

Too much internal lubricant may weaken the interaction between PVC molecular chains. Although the material may appear well plasticized, the final product can become less tough.
③ Insufficient external lubricant

Large bubbles inside the board
Connected bubbles
Yellowing
Rough surface
When external lubrication is insufficient, friction between the PVC melt and the die wall increases. This can cause overheating, PVC degradation, and unstable foam structures.
④ Excessive external lubricant
Possible symptoms:
Die build-up
Wax or oil-like deposits on the board surface
Surface contamination or moving streaks
Too much external lubricant cannot be fully absorbed by the melt. It may accumulate on the die surface and later transfer onto the board.
3. How to Adjust the Formulation
If internal lubrication is insufficient:
Increase internal lubricant dosage or select a lubricant with better compatibility to improve plasticization.
If internal lubrication is excessive:
Reduce the amount of internal lubricant and pay attention to the balance between toughness and heat resistance.
If external lubrication is insufficient:
Increase external lubricant dosage, such as paraffin wax or PE wax, to reduce friction between the melt and the die.
If external lubrication is excessive:
Reduce the external lubricant amount and choose a lubricant with lower precipitation tendency if necessary.
